Coding Blog Coding Blog: Why so many comments are modded down?
Posted by HopeSeekr on Wednesday, January 26 @ 23:24:16 CST
Contributed by HopeSeekr

As has been pointed out by some people, a great many articles -- OK, nearly every one -- say there are more comments than most people see. The reason is that they have been modded down by one or more of the users. Generally, all these down-mods occur for merely three recurring reasons: Flames by programmers of hostile forks, flames advertising hostile forks, flames against my personal character when in response to personal articles about myself.

First, the second most voluminous poster on xMule.ws -- both in the forums and in comments -- is the mainter of the hostile fork of this application, Kry, aka Nicely (among several other aliases) and coming from the same Spanish ISP These are always flames meant *primarily* to gain more users for his application, which spawned as a 100% copy off of all the xMule programmers' efforts. Second, a great many of that same hostile fork's contributors (~15) have more or less off and on flamed here if it suits Kry's purposes, Although they will almost certainly contest this fact (Which is difficult to prove since they use different IPs, aliases) it is mirrored elsewhere, such as our GnomeFiles page. The *sole* exception to this pattern is Mikkel Schubert of the hostile fork, who is so non-hostile I perpetually wonder why he supports them...(he claims its because he thought that the other project was more friendly, as they did not have xMule devs a) spying in its dev channel, b) flaming its forums (see Nicely (kry) flame(s) below, c) copying every advance, or d) claiming "xmule was dead" (uses rel=nofollow) ... a lie perpetrated predominantly by a fellow hostile-fork dev. Third, in the past, the proponents of the hostile fork and the failed one before that (the so-called xMule v2 client) have concluded -- quite publically, predominantly on xMule servers -- that I am some how "dictatorial" because I would delete walking-advertisements for forks, on the hosts *I* pay money for (there have been zero donations since Dec 31 ,2003, well over a year ago). You use my code for free, there are no for-profit banner ads on this site (all of them are put there solely because I support their content). But insult ME for your gain? un un. By modding down, the record exists for any registered user can read. Registering is little more than saying "I will stick a nick to the flames I write", and if you do this much, the chances of you getting modded down are greatly reduced. The easiest way to get modded down is to mention a hostile fork by name, link to it, and state it is "far superior" without elucidly stating why. I do not believe I have ever done this with regards to the other program (that is, flamed for xmule on their site) except possibly when I have been very mentally unstable (read: biologically depressed). This just isn't cool.

Hey,
just wanted to say that the reason why I joined aMule rather than xMule didn't have anything to do with one project being "dead" and the other not. If you can recall, I was at that time idling in both #xMule and #aMule, so I suffered from no such illusions. I think you've asked me about it later, but I'm not entirely sure, though I'm a bit supprised regardles.

The main reason why I did join aMule rather than xMule was that at that time, the sheer paranoia surrounding the xMule channel was rather extreme, and that simply made aMule a more appealing when I was considdering which OSS project to join.

And when I choose to be upfront and told you (to be fair, I think you were away at that time) that I had joined the aMule project, I was immediatly questioned by Run if I my decision had been based on lies, which I found rather rude. Somehow, I harbor the illusion that I am able to think for myself. The end-result was that I left #xMule since my presence was no longer wanted.

If you are interested in that conversation, then I can easily post the IRC logs.

P.S.
Feel free to tell Kry (or anyone else for the matter) to ***** off from your website (or just ban them, which is easier). I'll ask that they actually do so, since hanging around here helps nobody.

Moderate your own posts, then. You got REPLIES to your insults or lies, never a direct mention of a fork from me without you talking about it first.

So, leave us alone, and we'll leave you alone. Nothing I would like more than never having to post here again.

I see you're back, again, after stating, again, that you left xMule. I hope this time you just ignore us and this is the last post regarding us.

LOL~!!!! Kry of COURSE replies RIGHT AFTER your post!!!

Saying his often "leave us alone!"

ANd you obviously didn't think we had reason to be paranoid back then, of course! That would be true if proponents of your program were not a) spying in the channel (for instance Kry using amule.org's shell account to be in IRC as alsaan), ripping EVERY noticeable fix from xMule 1.6.0 to 1.7.4 (~9 months) before we could release files (while having closed CVS yourself), and c) flaming xMule every where.

ADditionally, I had *no* idea you joined that project the same time Run was a developer here. If you will recall, he left it after finding out what -- in his own (paraphrased) words -- amateurs they were. So, if he was paranoid, all the more reason since he knew them somewhat.

PS I hope you're not offended that I malremembered the part about xmule being dead. Yet...RIGHT at this time that you speak xmule.org was being ddos'd and died, and it was RIGHT at this time delta started saying everywhere xmule was dead.

One more thing. YOU personally must know that I have tried officially -- literally -- more than 10 times (I bleieve 16) to have peace between the projects, only to always be blocked by Kry and Delta. You give us (and me personally) lip-service that Kry should "play nice", such as above, yet nothing ever happens. Sort of sad :-/

*sight*

Right after I tell you to leave us alone and we'll leave you, you again attack us:

"That would be true if proponents of your program were not a) spying in the channel (for instance Kry using amule.org's shell account to be in IRC as alsaan), ripping EVERY noticeable fix from xMule 1.6.0 to 1.7.4 (~9 months) before we could release files (while having closed CVS yourself), and c) flaming xMule every where."

a) amule.org has no shell account. I always join your irc if I need to, as Kry, never alsaan, and I keep wondering why you keep insisting on that 'alsaan' nonsense.

b) aMule has not code from xMule after I joined it, while xMule has a lot of code, even my (c) string around. And we don't havce closed CVS, we release tarballs every day.

c) oh PLEASE.

And btw: "LOL~!!!! Kry of COURSE replies RIGHT AFTER your post!!!"

I woke up, clicked 'mules' bookmarks on my browser, it opened the 16 mules-related links I have on bookmarks, and one of them popped as you AGAIN attacking us without reason. Nothing related to Xiagnar, as I had, infact, not talk to him since several dasy. We're both too busy with exams and real life and we're not even coding much.

Considering that I haven't talked with Kry for the last few days (due to a dead ADSL connection and a week-long exam), I can only say that it is a coincidence.

Saying his often "leave us alone!"

Yes, it would be more convincing if he just ignored you and xmule.ws.

ANd you obviously didn't think we had reason to be paranoid back then, of course!

The only places where I ever find it nescecarry to be paranoid is when it comes to security, and I can't see that I should worry at all if members of another OSS project were looking me over the shoulder ... that's what OSS is about, isn't it? Freely available source-code.

That would be true if proponents of your program were not a) spying in the channel (for instance Kry using amule.org's shell account to be in IRC as alsaan), ripping EVERY noticeable fix from xMule 1.6.0 to 1.7.4 (~9 months) before we could release files (while having closed CVS yourself), and c) flaming xMule every where.

a) This should be simple to prove, just post the logs containing alsaan's hostmask and compare it to that of aMule.org, etc.
b) As far as I can recall, they did credit you for those changes or is doing what the GPL is made to allow for considered "ripping people off"?
c) Flaming or unfounded critisism is stupid, but I honestly can't see a problem if all that is done is to promote aMule as an alternative. Don't forget, xMule has been "dead" several times, by your own words.

ADditionally, I had *no* idea you joined that project the same time Run was a developer here. If you will recall, he left it after finding out what -- in his own (paraphrased) words -- amateurs they were. So, if he was paranoid, all the more reason since he knew them somewhat.

Wait, Run left xMule because the developers of aMule were "amateurs"? That doesn't really make any sense. And as I have stated above, I can't find the need for paranoia within this context.

PS I hope you're not offended that I malremembered the part about xmule being dead.

Nah, my memory isn't perfect either, so mistakes happen.

Yet...RIGHT at this time that you speak xmule.org was being ddos'd and died, and it was RIGHT at this time delta started saying everywhere xmule was dead.

I don't speak german and nor do I really read other linux forums than the Gentoo one, so I never saw any of those claims. And as I said, I used to hang out in #xMule.

One more thing. YOU personally must know that I have tried officially -- literally -- more than 10 times (I bleieve 16) to have peace between the projects, only to always be blocked by Kry and Delta.

Frankly, I was "blocking" some of those attempts, more specifically the ones that called for Kry and delta to be "marganalized". Because I found that to be absurd, as it woundn't be solving the problem at all.
The main problem would be that most of your peace-attempts (however sensere they might be) almost always seems to end up as attacks.

You give us (and me personally) lip-service that Kry should "play nice", such as above, yet nothing ever happens. Sort of sad :-/

I have asked Kry to stop posting here before, but he is not my property and I cannot control his actions. Our relationship is one of mutal respect, not master/slave. Even if his clashes here makes me want to kick his ass once in a while.
